The reality
If you live in rented accommodation in Catalonia, you can recover up to €500 per year —or even €1,000 in some cases— in your Income Tax return thanks to the current regional tax deduction. There is a widespread belief that rental deductions disappeared in 2015.
This idea is incorrect and may be causing you to lose money every year.
Expert analysis
The confusion arises from the fact that there are two different types of deductions:
-
State deduction
Only applicable to rental contracts signed before 2015. -
Regional deduction (Catalonia)
Fully in force for new contracts.
Many tenants do not apply for it due to lack of awareness, despite being entitled to it.
This regional deduction is what allows the current tax savings.
Who can apply the rental deduction?
You can deduct 10% of the rental amount, with a maximum of €500 per year, if you meet at least one of the following requirements:
-
Be 35 years old or younger (extended age limit).
-
Have been unemployed for more than 183 days during the year 2025.
-
Have a disability rating equal to or greater than 65%.
-
Be widowed and be 65 years old or older.
-
Be a large family or a single-parent family
(in this case, the deduction limit increases to €1,000).
Income limits
In addition to meeting one of the above requirements, you must not exceed the following income thresholds (taxable base):
-
Up to €30,000 per year under individual taxation.
-
Up to €45,000 per year under joint taxation.
Exceeding these limits means losing the right to apply the deduction.
Conclusion
Being well informed is the best way to save.
Reviewing the rental contract and income can result in real tax savings in this year’s Income Tax campaign.
The “gift” from the Generalitat may be waiting for you, and many tenants are still not claiming it.
At Finques El Pallars we advise tenants and property owners so they are aware of all tax advantages and act with full legal certainty.
